Universal Works

    Filter

Universal Works brings the British workwear wardrobe into everyday menswear. The selection is made up of work fabrics and knitwear: wool fleece gilets, an indigo denim shirt and jacket, wool cardigans, moleskin and tweed trousers. The brand was founded in Nottingham in 2009 and builds its clothes around fit, without overloading them.

What you will find below is the selection we chose for our customers: a few shades (navy, olive, brown, black and indigo) that go well together.

      Brand history and heritage

Universal Works was founded in Nottingham, England, in 2009 by David Keyte. The core idea is to craft honest clothing: built around fit, never overdesigned, rooted in traditional British workwear.

In our selection, the brand occupies a distinct role: it represents British heritage alongside American workwear from Carhartt WIP and Red Wing Shoes, and Japanese denim from Edwin. Those familiar with Carhartt WIP will recognize the same foundation—utilitarian workwear—interpreted through a British lens.

Workwear references are evident across the selection's fabrics. Denim and moleskin were originally created for workwear garments. Tweed and wool knitwear, including Shetland, apply this functional ethos to everyday clothing. The wool fleece and bouclet fleece vests are sleeveless layers designed to be worn over a sweater or shirt.

What you will find in this collection

The selection features pieces from the current Autumn/Winter season: jackets and vests, knitwear, trousers, and denim. Here is an overview of each category.

      Jackets and vests

They represent the largest group. TheZip Waistcoatin wool fleece, in navy and olive, is a zipped vest to layer over a sweater. TheLancaster Giletin Bouclet Fleece, in blue and brown, serves the same purpose with a different texture. In indigo denim, there is theIves Jacketin Future Denim, paired with a work denim shirt in the same shade.

      Knitwear

TheZip Cardiganin wool, in Tawny and black, features a front zip closure. TheCurtis Sweaterin Shetland wool, navy, is the essential sweater. These are layering pieces designed to be worn over a shirt and under outerwear.

      Trousers

ThePleated Track Pant, featuring waist pleats, is the recurring style: in moleskin (Brushed black, Comfort navy and brown) and tweed (olive and brown). Moleskin is a dense cotton with a velvety finish; tweed has a rougher, visible weave.

      How to choose

Start from the layer the garment occupies. Vests and zip cardigans serve as mid-layers: easily added or removed without altering the rest of your outfit. The indigo denim jacket and shirt pair over lightweight knits, while the Shetland sweater fits underneath outerwear.

For trousers, choose based on fabric: moleskin offers a smooth, velvety finish, whereas tweed provides a visible weave. For tops, fleece delivers a soft, brushed texture, while knit wool provides a cleaner, drier feel.

The color palette is focused: navy, olive, brown, black, and indigo. We recommend starting with a color already present in your wardrobe and building around it: pair brown Pleated Track Pants with a navy vest, or a black cardigan with olive trousers. We curated this selection so an outfit can be built piece by piece, season after season.

Regarding sizing, the cut varies between models: while the brand prioritizes fit, not all garments drape the same way. The most reliable method is comparing flat measurements of a well-fitting garment in your wardrobe against the measurements of the chosen piece. For jackets and vests, consider the weight of the layer worn underneath.

      How to read model names

Models carry English names, with the final word usually denoting the color. Waistcoat means vest, Cardigan refers to an open-front knit, Sweater is a pullover, Jacket is a jacket, Shirt is a shirt, and Pant refers to trousers; Pleated indicates waist pleats. Before the color comes the fabric: wool fleece and Bouclet Fleece for vests, wool and Shetland for knits, Future Denim and Work Denim for indigo denim, moleskin and tweed for trousers, and wool mix for the Lindberg Pant in dark navy.

      Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Where and when was Universal Works founded?

In Nottingham, England, in 2009, by David Keyte. It is a British brand rooted in traditional workwear, crafting understated garments built around fit.

How do you choose the right size for a Universal Works garment?

The cut varies across different models. The most accurate approach is taking flat measurements of a well-fitting item you own and comparing them to the measurements of the desired piece. When sizing jackets, vests, and zip cardigans, account for the layer worn underneath.

How should wool, fleece, and moleskin garments be washed?

Always follow the care label sewn inside each garment for specific washing and drying instructions. As a general rule, wool knitwear—such as the Zip Cardigan or Curtis Sweater—should never be tumble dried and must be dried flat.

Which price range does this selection belong to?

Mid-range. Fleece vests are among the most accessible pieces, while wool knitwear and the Ives Jacket sit at a higher price point. Current prices for each item are displayed in the product grid above.
