Jackets for Men

    Filter

Chesapeake's down jackets, Bl'ker Vintage reversible vests, the Universal Works waistcoat in wool fleece, jackets in jungle cloth and in denim: the collection starts from the men's winter coat and works its way to the layers that go under it. For full cold the reference is Chesapeake's Down Jacket Lumberjack. For in-between days there are the Fireman Jacket Bedford in jungle cloth and the Donegal and pied de poule vests, which can be worn on either side. We chose them for the Pier Paolo Marotta shop in Formia by looking at fabric and construction first, the name on the label second.

Features and categories: outerwear jackets, jackets, vests

The collection is divided into distinct families: cold-weather outerwear, everyday jackets, and mid-layers designed to fit underneath or stand alone during seasonal transitions.

Winter jackets: down jackets and down vests

For peak winter, the benchmark is the down jacket. Chesapeake's offers it with theDown Jacket Lumberjackin deep blue and, in a sleeveless option, with theDown Vest Seattlein dark blue. The down vest serves two purposes: worn over a sweater on cold, dry days, or under a fabric jacket when the temperature drops. It keeps the core warm while leaving the arms free.

      Work jackets and peacoats

Alongside down jackets are workwear-inspired jackets. TheFireman Jungle Cloth Jacket Bedfordby Chesapeake's is crafted in heavy-duty jungle cloth, available in military green and navy blue. Thepeacoat in rinsed denim, also by Chesapeake's, takes denim beyond jeans: through wear and washing, the fabric lightens and develops the unique marks of its wearer.

      Mid-layers: overshirts and wool vests

Theovershirtby Aiburai layers over a shirt or t-shirt and underneath outerwear; it is available in military green, kasha, and blue. Vests by Bl'ker Vintage are fully reversible and can be worn on both sides: theDonegal Vest, thePied de Poule Vestand theWool Vest, the latter in owl brown and owl navy. Universal Works completes the range with theZip Waistcoatin wool fleece, in navy and olive green: a wool fleece vest featuring a zip closure.

      How to choose

      Based on temperature

Three levels. For harsh winter weather, choose the down jacket. For cold but mild days, opt for a jacket like the Fireman Jacket or the denim peacoat, layered with a vest underneath when needed. For transitional mid-season weather, wear an overshirt or vest on its own over a shirt or knitwear. Layering allows for quick adjustment throughout the day: the vest can be removed while the jacket stays on.

      Based on fit

Our in-store recommendation is to try on the jacket over the exact layers you intend to wear underneath during winter. A down jacket tried over a t-shirt may feel correct, but will bind across the shoulders and shorten the sleeves once worn over a sweater. Three checks to perform: the shoulders do not bind when crossing your arms, the sleeves cover the wrists when reaching forward, and the front fastens cleanly over a sweater without pulling. For vests, core fit is key: a vest intended under a jacket must fit close to the body, while one worn over a sweater allows for more ease.

      Based on budget

Aiburai overshirts and the Zip Waistcoat by Universal Works sit at the accessible end of the collection. Bl'ker Vintage vests and the Down Jacket Lumberjack represent the mid-range tier. The Fireman Jacket Bedford and the denim peacoat by Chesapeake's sit at the top tier of the range. Updated prices for each item are listed in the grid above.

      Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a winter jacket and a coat?

In everyday language, a winter jacket is designed for severe cold, typically insulated and fastened up to the neck; a coat or jacket is a fabric outerwear garment worn alone or layered. On this page, winter outerwear includes down jackets such as theDown Jacket Lumberjackby Chesapeake's; fabric outerwear jackets include theFireman Jungle Cloth Jacket Bedfordand the denim peacoat.

What features make a jacket windproof?

A high-fastening neck closure, close-fitting cuffs that prevent air entry, and dense fabric construction. Knit layers provide warmth, but wind penetrates them easily: they work best underneath a sealed outer shell rather than on their own. At our coastal store in Formia, we recommend wearing a vest underneath a fully zipped or buttoned jacket.

Can a vest replace a winter jacket?

During transitional seasons, yes, when layered over a sweater. In peak winter, it functions underneath outerwear. TheDown Vest Seattleby Chesapeake's features down insulation; theWool Vestby Bl'ker Vintage and theZip Waistcoatby Universal Works are crafted from wool.

Which pieces can also serve as a men's spring jacket?

Mid-layers. The overshirt originated as an outer shirt layered over other garments; as temperatures rise, it functions on its own over a t-shirt. The same applies to wool vests worn over a shirt. The down jacket remains strictly a winter piece.
